La Fabrica

7 months of eating pintxos is definitely a challenge, and surely once in a while, you’re up for a restaurant sit-down, serving a 3-course prix fixe meal. Well, that happened to me.

As much as I love the idea of pintxos and getting to taste a little bit of everything, I thought it would be nice to change it up a little bit, and I’m glad I picked a restaurant, La Fabbrica, well-known for delicious food at a great value.

For the 38 euro “Menu Especial”, you pick 2 entrees, one fish, one meat, one dessert; and the meal additionally comes with a free bottle of wine from the given list, water, coffee, amuse-bouche and some mignardises to end the meal. Not bad, right? Especially in a city which has the most Michelin-starred restaurants per head of population.

La Fabrica, sits right by the local port of San Sebastian. The restaurant’s name which literally means, factory, still holds remnants of its past, yet had a modern/high-end feel to it. 2 waiters managed the 20 something clients that started piling in around 2pm.

The wine for the meal, a 2007 Crianza from MonteBuena. Light enough for the entrees and fish and strong enough for the meat dish.

Amuse-Bouche: Cream of peas, Chantilly and Piment d’Espelette spice

Entrees: Shrimp Salad with Fresh herb vinaigrette. Salty, sweet, great start.

Ravioli of mushrooms with truffle sauce

Creamy with just the right amount of truffle.

Fish: Grilled Seabass, sweet pepper emulsion, and mashed potato

Meat: Txuleta steak, potatoes and a reduced jus

But, also…Iberico pig cheek confit, apple chutney

Yoghurt and berries to cleanse the palate. Sourness is calmed with the fresh yoghurt. Good treat.

Lime Sorbet from the Cave..I didn’t get the title, until I tried it. Loads of alcohol in this fruity beverage which made it strong but I welcomed it. Perhaps could have been a bit smaller.

Dessert: Apple tart with cider caramel, lemon cream. Not like Paris apple tart but good enough for me!

If you’ve come to San Sebastian for pintxos, this is definitely the city to try out all of them. But if you’re in the mood for something different, to break the pattern, you cannot go wrong with La Fabrica.
