Bistro Volnay

If your tired shopping legs (I’m talking to you, ladies) gave up on Rue de la Paix, between Opera and Place Vendome, you’ll be happy to find Bistro Volnay, on a side street nearby.

The chic old glamour restaurant is beautiful, set with dark wood, art-deco type mirrors and simple yet elegant tableware.

With a bottomless bread basket and fresh pork rillette to munch on, I knew this was going to be a simple yet delicious meal. The staff, run by women, is attentive and quick.

The restaurant offers 1 prix-fixe menu at 38 euros which is not bad, especially with the expensive location.

Foie gras de Canard, Chutney de Griotte (Duck foie gras with Morello cherry)

It’s foie gras, what more can I say?

Carpaccio de Poulpe de Roche, tomate et citron (Carpaccio of octopus with tomato and lemon)

I realized how much I love warm capriccios. This was absolutely fresh, great acidity and flavor and just the right amount of cilantro to give it a little kick.

afterwards…

Bavette de Black Angus, gratin dauphinois (Black Angus Flank steak, potatoes)

I was afraid that the skirt steak would have been too lean and dry but a huge slab of meat arrived and it remained judy and tender.

Boudin Noir, Salade (spécial of the day)

I could eat blood sausage all day. This was crunchy on the outside due to the crispy outer-layer and soft and not so sweet on the inside. Some restaurants tend to put diced apples and onions but the flavor was subtle enough to bring out the vivid and strong taste of the blood sausage itself.

Dessert

Soufflé tradition Grand-Mariner « à la minute » (Grand-Marnier soufflé)

Creamy, yet light and fluffy and just the right temperature. I could feel the Grand-Marnier still reducing itself within the mixture. Beautiful.

Great choice for lunch, nothing more, nothing less.
